I got my first skateboard in 1975, a solid oak Super Surfer with clay, loose ball-bearing wheels. By 1977 I was a local at Shawn Peddies Pool. Fast-forward. Now, in my 50th year of skateboarding, I have ridden a lot of crappy back-yard pools. But, there have also been some absolute gems that I will never forget. The whole experience is extremely immersive. From the commitment it takes to barge, to the discipline of adhering to "the 15 minute rule", and, of course, the love of hydrodynamics, It is ultimately the unpredictable nature of the quest and the sweet concrete nectar that is the lure and the hook. The adrenalin flows differently when you're in that kind of environment. Your heightened senses allow you to remember the details as vivid memories of time and space. Suddenly, the simple things become relevant and meaningful. Familiar objects become tangible reminders of the questionable decisions made, and, the inevitable regrets gone unrealized.
